Qualities that make an ideal board member include:

  1. Knowledge of and commitment to high governance standards and Board practices.

  2. Demonstrated leadership, and the ability to think and act strategically. Quantitative decision-making experience may also be a consideration.

  3. Ability and willingness to engage as a Board member in financial development (prior demonstrated experience preferred).

  4. A clear commitment to Sierra Nevada Journeys’ mission and values.

  5. An appreciation for and willingness to learn about the importance of equity and inclusion.

  6.  Personal characteristics and experience that would contribute to Board diversity.

  7.  A broad network of relationships within Sierra Nevada Journeys’ stakeholder community is preferred.


Board composition criteria encompass the following:

Students reach the highest point at camp called “The Bald Spot” on their morning nature hike. — Grizzly Creek Ranch

  1. Diversity with respect to background, personal characteristics and gender.

  2. Functional expertise within the disciplines important to Sierra Nevada Journeys such as finance, operations, human resources, and financial development.

  3. Reasonable representation from Northern Nevada and Northern California.

  4. Experience and knowledge of science education and the school systems in Northern Nevada and Northern California.

  5. An understanding of the potential for lifelong impacts of outdoor experience and education.
