Ways to Help

Monthly Giving

Contributing with a monthly gift is easy to do and a simple way to provide ongoing support that can have a significant impact on our students and programs. Monthly giving provides reliable funding that allows us to plan and execute vital projects and initiatives effectively.

Annual Giving

You can help us reach more youth by renewing your tax-deductible gift each year to our Student Scholarship Fund. Annual donors are helping empower youth and ensure more students have access to the outdoors.

We are committed to transparency and accountability. As a donor, you will receive regular email updates on the programs your donation helps fund and the benefits to our students.

Corporate and Business Sponsorships

Corporate giving programs are an investment in social good. Collectively, you and your employees can help make a difference in our communities. Employees respect leaders who do good work and prefer companies that are a positive force in improving the communities where we all live, work and play.

Matching Gifts: Consider matching the donations made by your employees or check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program.

Volunteer: We love having employee volunteers for Family STEM Nights and Girls in STEM Camp. Contact us if you are interested in joining an Advisory Committee or serving on our Board of Trustees.

Gift and Estate Planning

There are a variety of ways you can make a tax-deductible gift to Sierra Nevada Journeys through new cash donations, non-cash giving, or planned giving.

Cash: Typically, your cash gifts may be deductible up to 60 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for the taxable year.  Any excess is deductible over the next five years.

Securities: You can make a gift of appreciated stock that you have owned for a year or more for a deduction and help you avoid capital gains tax upon transfer. You can also sell depreciated stock that you have owned for a year or more at a loss and donate the cash, providing you with TWO deductions: 1) The first deduction is for the realized income loss, reducing the amount of tax you pay; and 2) You can claim the charitable deduction for the gift.

Charitable IRA Rollover: If you are 70 ½ or older, you can direct funds from your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) straight to Sierra Nevada Journeys. Donated dollars are not taxable to you. To be tax-free, the gift must come directly to us without passing through your hands.

Donor Advised Funds (DAF): When you set up a DAF with cash, securities, or appreciated assets, you are eligible for a current-year tax deduction. With a DAF, you can be strategic about your philanthropic giving and can make gifts directly to Sierra Nevada Journeys.

Real Estate: If you own real estate that is fully paid off and has appreciated in value, you can gift the property to Sierra Nevada Journeys, thus deducting the fair market value and avoiding the capital gains tax.

Bequest in Will or Living Trust: You may include Sierra Nevada Journeys as a beneficiary of your will or living trust for a specific amount, for a percentage of your estate or as a contingent beneficiary.

Life Insurance: Your need for life insurance may change over time. You can gift a life insurance policy to Sierra Nevada Journeys or simply name us as the beneficiary.  For the gift of a paid-up policy, you will receive an income tax deduction equal to the lesser of the cash value of the policy or the total premiums paid.
