Golden Pinecone Sustainability Awards 2017

golden pinecone awards.PNG

Honoring organizations and individuals for their sustainability efforts in our community.

When: Tuesday, November 7 - 6-9 p.m.
Where: National Automobile Museum
Live music by Boondoggle
Hosted by greenUP! and GREENevada

The Golden PineCone Sustainability Awards is a legacy event initiated by Environmental Leadership and run for more than 25 years by Environmental Leadership, Nevada EcoNET and more recently greenUP! GREENevada hosted a dinner event to honor award recipients and their communities.

The Golden Pinecone Ball was started by Tod Bedrosian, Bob Fulkerson, Glenn Miller and Bob Loux to bring the environmental community together as friends and initially to get the community excited about stopping the dump of nuclear waste. The pinecone awards were handmade out of plywood, an ironic twist on formal award ceremonies to honor environmental achievements of the past year.

Extreme Adventure

While at Sierra Nevada Journeys, scale the Alpine Tower, hike across our rugged trails and fly down the zip-line without leaving the comforts of camp. If that’s not extreme enough for you, we’ll take you to Lassen Volcanic National Park – only an hour and a half away from camp – to spend two incredible days hiking a 10,000-foot peak and having a campout with your friends. Watch the mud pits bubble at your feet and experience the icy chill of a crater lake. Now, that’s extreme!

Mission NGSS for Northern Nevada K-8 Teachers

Mission NGSS was a blast! 96 Nevada teachers learned how to incorporate Next Generation Science Standards into their classroom through the lens of energy and the environment. We simulated a Mission to Mars and identified basic life support systems in order to survive. This hands-on weekend workshop explored the complexities of energy as it relates to NGSS.

The weekend workshop was offered through a collaboration of Desert Research Institute, Sierra Nevada Journeys, Washoe County School District, RPDP of Northern Nevada, Project Learning Tree, and EnergySmart Education (sponsored by NV Energy and Southwest Gas Corporation), Catamount Fund and NAAEE.

Sacramento Big Day of Giving

STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) literacy is in critical demand and Sacramento area elementary schools are booking Sierra Nevada Journeys as their education partner for both students and educators at an incredible pace.

Our in-class and field-experiment programming has grown from 12 schools and 930 students in 2015 to 30 schools and 4,500 students this year! We have waiting lists and need to hire more educators and equipment to keep up with the demand.

Sacramento is hungry for our programming and Sierra Nevada Journeys needs your financial support to continue to deliver it.

We focus on under-served communities who typically get less than one hour of science instruction per week and turn 1st - 6th graders into environmental scientists, geologists and engineers during our programming. 90% of the students we serve demonstrate a significant improvement in science standards based on assessment data!

Join the fun on May 4th for Sacramento Region Community Foundation's Big Day of Giving. If you'd like to get a head start, schedule a donation starting April 14th.

Donations can be made here: https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/sierranevadajourneys

Northern Nevada's March for Science

Please join us as we march from Virginia and Liberty Streets to the Believe Plaza where science community leaders will speak to the importance of science in medicine, education, the environment, and the upcoming generation. We will be marching to support the role of science as an important source of information in guiding policy, both locally and nationally. This March will take place nationally and internationally with community members, educators, and scientists from around the globe. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. Policy change and community outreach will start with Marches for Science world-wide, but it is imperative that we continue to celebrate and defend science.

Nevada's Big Give

Summer Camp is one of the many programs that Sierra Nevada Journeys offers our youth. It is a place where children can climb higher, fly farther, laugh harder, and dream bigger than they ever imagined. Our powerful, enriching summer camp immerses children in outdoor learning, teamwork, and leadership, promoting achievement well past the campfire.

We are partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada for the second year to send 20 Littles to SNJ Summer Camp at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, Calif. To send 20 Littles, we have set a fundraising goal of $11,980. Imagine the thrill and excitement of children who rarely escape the confines of city life as they experience the majestic and pristine Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus.

When you donate to Sierra Nevada Journeys during Nevada's Big Give, you will directly support children who would otherwise never attend camp. You’ll be giving children access to a world beyond any they’ve ever experienced.

Donate today through March 23 here: https://nvbiggive.razoo.com/story/Sierra-Nevada-Journeys?referral_code=share
