Kayla was born and raised much of her early life in Sacramento, but has lived in Lassen County and Southern Oregon. All three locations allowed her to enjoy and experience the great outdoors, which has fostered her love of learning and teaching in her adult life.
She received both her BA in Liberal Studies (science focus) and Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential through Sacramento State. In her undergrad, Kayla served on the S.C.T.A Board to advocate for equitable and quality public education in the Sacramento community, something she's very passionate about. As a representative of her union, she helped to build grant-funded gardens for elementary schools, organize school wide science nights, and a library remodel throughout surrounding districts. In her free time, she helped to develop a community litter pick up group called "Pick-It-Up Sacramento", who organize citizens to clean the water ways within their community.
When she is not working or volunteering, Kayla enjoys hiking with her dog, traveling, and fungi/truffle hunting.
