Thank you Sepulveda!

Posted on 14. Sep, 2008 by bethany.

Hey Friends!
Sepulveda finished up strong with everyone reaching the summit and a whole lot of fun and learning!

We even had a little poetry:

“We learned about rockets,
Lift, drag, and thrust.

We learned to find the North Star,
when lost this is a must.

We learned the rhodopsin,
at night helps us see.

And we learned about Ort,
and how less wasteful we can be.

We met people named Chick Pea,
Dirt, and Sequoya.

And we found that Wacka Wacka,
can really annoy ‘ya.

We lived and died in the forest,
by luck, skill, or chance.

But our favorite thing we learned,
Was this AWESOME dance…

Tribo-lumin- escence
Tribo-lumin- escence
Tribo-lumin- escence
Tribo-lumin- escence”

Thanks gentleman!

We found out that teamwork can be really tough, but worth it in the end!

And for those of you worried about the teachers not working hard, see below.

WooHOOOOOOO!

This morning Sierra Nevada Journeys all pitched in and got to help crew with the Energizer Bunny balloon this morning! Vistas, directors, board members alike all pitched in to get the 166 feet tall, (the height of a six-story building and 15-feet taller than the Statue of Liberty) bunny up in the air!

It was a great morning! We got to work with a great crew of seasoned veterans ( Thanks Lou and Kelly for inviting us).

We are looking forward to working together in many more exciting community events.

See, even carnivores and herbivores can get along!

Hey friends!

Our hike yesterday was amazing! We got to see bear tracks, all sorts of animal scat, and the view from the top was, of course, phenomenal.

And you know who likes playing with our newest staff member Schmitty (see rubber chicken below)? Everyone. Everyone loves Schmitty!

NO ORT! This table along with a couple others have had no ort. We are excited to be able to conserve ENERGY *buzzzzzzz* this week by not wasting food and water in the dining hall!

During yesterday’s open rec we enjoyed archery, ultimate frisbee, and horseshoes. This afternoon we are going to play some ping pong, do some arts and crafts, and hit archery again!

With all of this fun that we are having, it’s hard to believe that we are learning about Buckminster Fuller’s hair brained idea’s about triangles and Bernoulli with his physics! When we get home we can show you because we’ve been writing and drawing all about it in our journals!

We are getting really excited because tonight is the campfire! We’ve been practicing our skits all week and can’t wait to show them to everyone!

Hey Friends!

Welcome back to another fun and exciting season of Journeys Outdoor School! This week we have one of our FAVORITE schools to kick off the season- Alyce Taylor Elementary.

Yesterday everyone got here and we got rolling pretty quickly. We learned all about Ort, the 3 respects, and got a tour around the new site- Grizzly Creek Ranch. (www.grizzlycreekranch.org)

We played a lot of games and we even snuck in a lesson or two. ;) There was one table at dinner that no ORT! It was pretty amazing.

Today we are doing a variety of things. Some of us are hiking and some of us are building rockets and geodesic domes. I’ll try to post some pictures later today!

I’m heading out to go sit in the sun. It’s so nice and sunny up here, but the cool breeze makes it the perfect day.

Hey Friends!

Last week, SNJ kicked off a new and exciting summer backpacking program called Youth Backcountry Camps. We have partnered up with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association in this venture and we had a blast! Our first program was an all female group composed of some new friends and some of our old friends from our Wonderous Woman of Science program. Check it out:

Here we are clearing some trail! It was a long afternoon, but we managed to clear 225 feet of trail in just 4 hours!

Some of us made new friends of sorts….

And some of us hung out with old friends!

We have another YBC coming up next week and then we will be heading out to Lamoille Caynon to help facilitate a teachers conference!

Hi Friends!
I can’t really tell you how cold the water is at 7am. I could tell you that the water is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but that wouldn’t quite articulate how COLD it really is. :) This morning it seemed to be a bit chillier than yesterday. (Props to Logan for taking this AMAZING picture too!)

For those of us who went hiking yesterday, there were a few really great animal sighting, the largest of those was a four point buck. We were nice and quiet, so it hung out for a bit.

Today we have been brushing up on our teamwork and doing some low ropes. Tomorrow we will be harnessing up and doing high ropes!
Thanks for all of your loving messages! We can’t wait to tell you all about our camp expereince on Thursday!

Hi Friends!
Sorry it’s been so long since the last post, there was no internet at beautiful Claire Tappaan Lodge! I’m not going to lie, it was nice being “away” from everything for a week!
We had the pleasure of hosting a very special group this week at Summit Camp, French Ford Middle School out of Winnamucca, NV. I’ve never been so impressed with a group of young people! Thank you to all of you for being so respectful of yourselves, each other, and our environment (we are kinda big on that kind of thing here…)! We had soooo much fun!

Look! It’s a Wumble Bee!

A special shout out from SNJ staff to the staff of Nevada Outdoor School for all of your help this week! Bonobo, we will miss you!

Thanks again for checking in! We are gearing up for our last week of Summit Camp for 2008 at Grizzly Creek Ranch!

Tourney for the Journey!!!!

Posted on 19. Mar, 2008 by bethany.

1

Hi friends –

Sierra Nevada Journeys’ 2nd annual “Tourney for the Journey” is on! This is an exciting time for both NCAA Basketball and for helping to make a difference in the lives of youth. “Feeding two birds from one hand” as our kids like to say. We couldn’t be more excited about the progress SNJ has made in its short 15 month history. In 2007 we served 620 students with nearly 18,000 student-education hours. We gave out nearly $5,000 in scholarships in a range of residential and in-school programs and our growth has been supported by more than 50 volunteers providing over 5,000 hours of contributed effort. We’re now at a permanent staff of four and just two weeks ago we served our 1000th child. All of this has been made possible because of people like you who realize that they have the power to transform kid’s lives.

Like last year, this year’s “Tourney for the Journey” allows you to fill out an NCAA tournament bracket then watch how your selections do … all with the opportunity to win prizes! With the proceeds collected we’ll be able to offer scholarships to under served students and keep our program fees affordable. One of the organization’s top priorities is ensuring that students from a wide variety of backgrounds have the opportunity to experience the outdoors, science enrichment, and leadership programming.

It’s easy to participate in the event, just follow the two steps below:

Step 1: Make Your Picks & Donate

Go to the Tourney Site www.sierranevadajourneys.org/tourneyforthejourney.html and click on the basketball icon to register for the Tourney, make your selections, and donate. Make all selections before 9am (Pacific Time) on Thursday March, 20th.

Suggested donations:

$25 for one entry … $45 for two entries … $10 for each additional entry per house-hold (it costs approximately $75 for a student to attend our 5-week after-school science, leadership, and rock-climbing program).

(Note: if you’d rather not participate in the tournament, no worries! You can still Donate via the above link)

Step 2: Follow Along With the Action!

Once the tournament starts, go back to the Tourney Site to check on how your teams are doing.

Prizes include:

Outdoor Adventure Pass good for one of more than 80 experiential adventures around the country!

$100 REI Gift-Card

National Parks Annual Pass

All participants will automatically be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a print from locally renown Reno artist Nanette Oleson, who paints idyllic scenes of the Sierra and western Nevada. The last-place entrant will receive a “Reno, Envy” t-shirt.

There’s only one day left, so hurry up and get your Madness on!

On behalf of Sierra Nevada Journeys, thanks so much for your support of our mission to empower youth through positive risk-taking and experiential leadership, science, and outdoor education!

Worried about having to spend Spring Break cleaning the house? Come on out and join us for our fun Earth-to-Sky Day camp being help March 10th-14th! We are going to be hiking, discovering, exploring, and getting dirty!

And the Summit Camp dates have been solidified! Come join us for a week of fun science exploration this summer!

YEA! Winter is here, Friends! This means a couple of things:
1- All schools are winding down for holiday breaks and we have more time to go play outside!
2- The snow is here and it’s going to keep coming! YES!

We’ve had a great year here at Sierra Nevada Journeys! We just celebrated our one year birthday *yeah* and we also just served our 500th student! We were able to reach out to many different groups in the community and meet their needs via school programs (Journeys Outdoor School), after school (Adventure Science Clubs and Women in Science and Leadership), and at RockSport Climbing Gym (our Pinnacles Leadership program).

Pretty soon we will be announcing all of our programs for 2008! We are going to be up at Clair Tappaan Lodge for our fun and exciting Winter Snowshoe Survival program. We will also be offering a few more Adventure Science Clubs, Pinnacles programs, and a super RAD Earth-to-Sky day camp over spring break in March!

Fantastic Week!

Posted on 25. Sep, 2007 by bethany.

We’re fully moved into our new offices at RockSport, Reno’s only indoor climbing center. It’s great being here … though to be honest, with all the routes and the bouldering only 50 short feet away, it’s proven quite a distraction for the staff! A healthy distraction, at least.

We’ve got Taylor Elementary, from Sparks, up at our residential Journeys Outdoor School right now, building Geodesic Domes, hiking and learning about forest ecology and the local granite, and launching water rockets. The students are having a blast, as are the staff. Their experiences bring to mind a poem that Bryce, one of our volunteer high-school cabin leaders, wrote back in June:

Science is fun, science is great,

Science is the food that goes on your plate

Science is the trees that grow in the ground,

Science is the air that you breathe all around

Science is the snow that melts on the mountains

Science is the water that comes out of fountains

Nature is different but still the same

Nature is the hills the trees and the plants
