Creating an Experience

A predominate message in the Journeys educational experience is just that, the Experience. Experiences can shape our lives more than we know. For example, from the outside, an experience can be a student building a rocket or talking with their peers to complete a challenge on the surface, but on a deeper level, students are building up critical thinking skills, learning independence, and gaining valuable community building skills. It is an opportunity for students to engage themselves in the community around them on a small and large scale. It is more than just going through the motions, it is taking the time to critically think and connect themselves to other people and places around them. This principle is stressed in all of the classes we teach.

We Focus on Three Main Areas of Study…

Leadership Education focuses on cooperation, problem solving skills, trust, self-reliance, and self-esteem to build strong individuals, leaders, and strong groups. SNJ instructors make every attempt to create a supportive and judgment free atmosphere where individuals and groups are able to challenge themselves and learn through their experiences. In many activities, we stress ‘challenge by choice’ where students evaluate their own experiences, comfort level, and goals to design their own challenge for that particular situation. We utilize group initiatives, low and high ropes courses (where applicable) to help attain these goals.

Science Education focuses on nurturing a sense of appreciation for the natural world through an understanding of ecological systems. When surrounded by the natural world or in the classroom, our staff works to pique students’ curiosity and guide their discovery experience. Basic ecological concepts are introduced and studied with an emphasis on how students can interact positively within natural systems. SNJ instructors encourage exploration; each class’ instructional outcomes are achieved through active, inquiry based, hands-on learning.

Outdoor Education focuses on the many interrelationships between our natural and social communities. Students can learn practical skills in orienteering, outdoor living skills, and by being a part of our Service Learning Projects. Students can integrate exploring their natural environment in a safe and meaningful way. By increasing the awareness of how individuals and communities interact with the environment, students envision ways that humans can make positive impacts in their homes and communities.
