New Summer Program: High Sierra Survival

We are introducing a new summer program for 2012: High Sierra Survival. Come spend a week in the wild with Sierra Nevada Journeys learning fundamental survival skills. Learn to track animals, build a shelter, find food and water, and use a map and compass. This 6-day program serves as a platform for those wanting to develop a deeper connection with the natural world. Join us, and investigate the Sierra Nevada mountains with safe and experienced instructors. Come take the challenge!

Dates: 7/22 to 7/27
Ages: 10-16
Cost: $389

Education Summary Reports

The organization will be posting a monthly Education Summary Report. The report contains a summary of the participants in our School and Field Based programs, Professional Development, and our Residential programs. Also included in the report are photos, highlights for the month, and anecdotes from our program and campus staff. All Education Summary Reports can be found on the Forms & Docs page.

Annual Appeal Letter

Sierra Nevada Journeys is a local educational non-profit with the mission of inspiring youth and communities to take care of the natural world through education, leadership development, and service. At the end of December we sent out our annual appeal letter to our donors for 2011. We wanted to thank all of our donors for their contribution to the organization. Your support has helped us continue to work with students and to extend out outreach to include those who need it most.

Extending our Curriculum

Currently, the school-based programs we offer are designed for 3-6 grade students and we have decided to begin developing a K-2 curriculum. We have organized an advisory group of K-2 teachers to help direct this new educational program to fit the needs and interests of teachers and address appropriate science standards for this age group. The advisory committee has chosen Earth Science as the topic, with a focus on process skills to support mastery of unifying content standards such as weather and erosion.

In the next meetings we hope to confirm the choice of process and content standards to be used in the new curriculum. Our next steps also include developing appropriate assessments for the unit. The dates for upcoming meetings have not been set, but please continue to check our website for updates. Welcome to the New Year! Even though students are out of school enjoying their winter vacation we are here getting ready for our winter and spring programs. For the first time in our history we are going to be offering winter programs up at the Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus. Students will have a chance to enjoy a day of outdoor education and snowshoeing. We will also begin our residential Journeys Outdoor School at the end of March. Also, keep your eyes out for upcoming professional development opportunities in the winter and spring.

Big Ideas Fest

Two of our staff members recently attended the 3rd annual Big Ideas Fest hosted by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Managements (ISKME). Sean and Joanna spent three days at the conference working with collaboration groups and learning new strategies for idea development. The collaboration groups worked together to develop an idea, create a prototype, and present their thoughts to the rest of the conference. Three of the ideas that were developed and presented at the conference were selected to receive funding for development. Joanna and Sean created a presentation that outlines the conference and action collaboration process. Use the link to view their presentation.

Inspired Educators Plan Together Retreat

This overnight retreat will give you an opportunity to relax, re-connect with your PLC or Teaching Team through fun and engaging activities, and give you uninterrupted planning time for the end of the year and next year.

(attending with a team of teachers is recommended but not required.)
